Healthcare elective abroads offer great opportunities to all medical students as they will finally put into practice all that they’ve been studying for nearly five years. Learning how a developing country provides healthcare will force you back to the basics of your education and help you to enhance your understanding and change your perception of the delivery of healthcare as a whole.
Medical, nursing, dentistry, radiography or midwifery placements in underdeveloped country will allow for any medical student to expand their knowledge and skills working along with other doctors and students from all around the world. Due to the lack of healthcare professionals, most hospital and clinics have far more patients that those they can actually treat. Most of the time there isn’t any technologic assistance used in diagnosis and the amount of available drugs is very minimal. Because of the shortage in medical equipment and drugs, you will have to go back to the basics and this is a new experience for most students.
Lois, a midwifery elective student, had the chance to gain invaluable work experience during her elective in Ghana. She knew before she left that infant mortality and maternity complication rates were higher in Africa, but nothing could prepare her for the reality of working in a developing country. Having to bring their own sheers and pillows, expecting women to remain silent during labour and delivering the baby without any privacy were experiences that struck her during her elective.
Lois soon found that despite the challenging conditions, midwifery knowledge and skills can be used anywhere. Within 45 minutes of her induction she was helping deliver her first baby of the day, and many more followed. Although the majority was pretty standard, unusual incidents were also taking place.
For all healthcare students electives overseas is a unique opportunity to get to know different aspects of healthcare in different environments.
