Two Way Radios : A Short Guide

Two way radios are very handy means of communication, and they are everywhere. For instant relaying of information, they get the job done better than most other devices. Some devices with which you are no doubt familiar are the popular walkie-talkies and family communicators. Cellular telephones are also examples of two way radio technology. Though the job they perform is similar, various two way radios accomplish their tasks in different manners. There are many types of two way radios.

Conventional two way radios are those that use designated RF channels. Quite a few varieties of conventional radios operate on multiple channel settings that may be selected by way of toggle switches, buttons, and dials. The user selects a particular frequency to talk on and selects it. In a multiple channel system, the various frequencies each have a specific purpose. For example, a crew on a construction site may have one channel assigned to supervisors and another is set aside for communications between those on the ground and workers operating heavy machinery. Two way radios said to be trunked automatically select channels. All of the radios on the system continually monitor a signal emitted by a control channel. A radio joins a conversation when the proper protocol is recognized by the handset. Granted, the system uses a particular channel in the form of the control, but it is actually grouped by the collection of radios. It is the electronics installed in the radios that enable conversation initiation.

Push-to-talk two way radios gained massive popularity in the form of cellular phones several years ago. When a rocker button is pushed, a chirp is broadcast alerting the user that the channel is available. Much like a walkie-talkie, the button is released so that the user can then receive the other end of the conversation. Analog two way radios are another type of communicator that many are familiar with. The handheld family radios are popular examples of handsets that operate on this signal. Unlike digital radios, however, only one conversation may be supported at a time. Simplex and duplex two way radios are another type of device. Simplex systems use one channel for transmission and reception. Duplex systems transmit and receive on separate channels. Still other devices operate on a hybrid simplex/duplex system. These systems are able to use duplex technology most of the time, but are also able to default to simplex on the base station when out of range of the duplex transmitters. Two way radios are long time favorites when it comes to communication. Each type of two way possesses certain advantages and disadvantages. It usually depends on how many people need to get in touch at one time.

The Google Nexus S : An Overview Of Its Specifications And Features

December 2010 saw the release of the latest handset from Google, called the Nexus S. Whereas the previous Google branded handset, the Nexus One, was manufactured by HTC; the new S model is produced by the Korean manufacturer Samsung. Some critics have claimed that the Samsung Google Nexus S is just another model from the Samsung Galaxy range, though there are a number of features that make the Nexus S stand out from the crowd.

The Samsung Google Nexus S, to give it its full title, has a few tricks up its sleeve that sets it apart from all the other Android phones on the market today. The most important factor, aside from the neat design, is the fact that the Nexus S comes with the latest version of the popular Android operating system, version 2.3 or Gingerbread. To power this newest evolution of the Android OS is a super fast 1GHz Hummingbird central processing unit (CPU), and 512MB of random access memory (RAM).

Externally, what causes this handset to stand out from the crowd is the curvature that has been incorporated into the design. The glass screen has a minor concave curve which is supposed to help comfort during extended periods of call time. Other factors that make this phone particularly special are the Super AMOLED display which projects a resolution of 480 x 800 (or 235 ppi), an internal digital compass, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope.

Unfortunately the one thing that is supposed to make this phone great, the updated Android OS, is the one thing that brings the Nexus S back down into the chasing pack of the Apple iPhone. The operating system, although better than previous versions, is still not as complete and capable as the Apple operating system. Although it is easier to say than to do, Google really should be aiming at more than what they have achieved and it is disappointing to say that it still feels lacking in many areas.

Ultimately the decision whether to splash money on Google’s newest handset is really down to your personal operating system tastes. Although the Gingerbread OS still has a few flaws, it is still a worthy contender against the iPhone 4G and quite easily the best Android phone available today.

What You Need To Know About The Blackberry Torch

There are loads of smartphones on the market at the moment, all aimed at ‘regular consumers’. One of these is the Blackberry Torch from Research in Motion, who are generally more familiar with making business-friendly products. How does the Torch stack up? Well, user options have been increased with the installation of a touchscreen alongside the normal Blackberry trackerpad. Another good feature is being able to arrange your apps however you want and the look and feel of the phone is improved by superior iconography.

Another new feature is the fact the Torch slides open but in most other respects it looks similar to other Blackberry devices and is quite attractive. It’s not as streamline as the iPhone and feels a little bulky to use, largely because of the full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard, though, is very useful and easy to operate, as it generally is on the Blackberry. You can choose to operate the phone via the 3.2inch touchscreen or by regular Blackberry methods depending on which you prefer.

One of the main positives about the Blackberry is the typically excellent call quality, and the Torch is no exception. The sound is very clear, although if you have the volume up to high on the speakerphone, then it can sound a bit shrill. Other than this, the speakerphone is of good quality. It’s also easy, quick and pain free to make a phone call – all valuable features. The Torch also boasts excellent signal, which is always useful when you’re making calls.

One area that lets the Torch down is the camera. This has an LED flash and 5 megapixel camera, but if left in default mode, the picture quality isn’t great and the photos don’t look that steady. There are a range of options to choose from though, and the single shot mode is where the camera is at its best, rather than the ‘continuous’ mode that comes as pre-set. The photography process is better than it has been on previous Blackberrys but there’s nothing that special about the lens.

The Blackberry Torch has good mail and messaging facilities, but they are a bit of a let down compared with pervious Blackberry devices. If you’re not already familiar with the facilities, then you may not be convinced by them but Blackberry users will appreciate the upgrade. One qualm is that it takes ages for the phone to register changes you’ve made to your email account online, although it is really easy to set up the function on the phone, which is good.

HTC Mozart 7 – A Look At Its Specifications And Features

The most recent hype in the mobile phone market has been due to the release of Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 operating system which is running on no less than five separate handsets, three of which are manufactured by HTC. HTC is a Taiwanese corporation that is known for its innovation in smartphone technology and its close relationship with the IT giant, Microsoft. Out of the five handsets that premiere the new operating system, the HTC Mozart 7, on paper at least, holds the most promise, but what is it actually like?

The HTC Mozart 7s best features include the brand new Windows operating system, a 3.7 inch S-LCD screen and a full eight megapixel camera. What makes the camera special is not only the large resolution photos that you can take, but also the xenon flash and the high definition video record function. To power the Mozart 7, HTC incorporates into the design their, now common 1GHz snapdragon processor, and an eight gigabyte non-expandable internal memory drive. On top of these things are the industry standard features of WiFi capability, Bluetooth connectivity and GPS.

In direct comparison with the other four handsets that have been released to showcase Microsoft’s new operating system, the Mozart 7 stands head and shoulders above the rest due to its external design and advanced camera. The Mozart 7 is the only WP7 phone on the market that can boast an eight megapixel camera with xenon flash, plus HD video recording. The casing design is superb to look at, especially the back cover that uses various materials and smooth, flowing lines to hide certain function buttons and catches.

Even though the Mozart 7s camera is able to take photos in high resolutions, its color reproduction is not great at the best of times. The xenon flash works well and is certainly better than the equivalent LED flash from competing handsets, but it can still not make up for the poor color reproduction problems that plague the camera mode. The only other real downside is the irony surrounding the musical ability of the Mozart 7. In contrast to what its name suggests, music reproduction is ok at best and the volume may not be loud enough for some people. Purchasing a pair of better quality headphones is a must if you enjoy listening to music on your mobile.

To sum up, the HTC Mozart 7 is a great smartphone, offering speed, functionality and ease of use all in a well designed, ergonomic casing. The few downsides of the digital camera and sound reproduction should not put you off from purchasing this great device, as long as you can get along with the Windows interface.

Everything from televisions to camcorders to video game systems are gift wrapped and presented to overjoyed family members and friends each year. Sony is one of the most well-known and established names in the electronics industry, and the company provides several popular products to give as gifts this Christmas.

Two of an electronics fan’s favorite pastimes are watching TV and surfing the internet, and Sony’s Internet TV combines them into one dynamic package. It is powered by Google TV, which is basically Google geared toward entertainment options. Sony also manufactures a variety of computers that make popular Christmas gifts. The Vaio computers are familiar names and some of the laptop versions provide Intel Wireless Display. This technology sends a signal from the computer to an HDTV and displays the contents of your hard drive on the large TV screen. The Sony Cyber-shot digital camera can capture panoramic photos and shoot video in AVCHD format that displays with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p at 60i. Last but not least, the Playstation 3 is still a Christmas gift powerhouse that combines gaming with online activities in one compact package.

What You Need To Know About Two Way Radios

A two way radio or “walkie talkie” allows two or more people to converse (often while separated by miles) by transmitting and receiving voice signals through the air. While they work very much like a telephone they have the advantage of being able to be used anywhere since they require no central network. The FRS/GMRS two way radio is the kind of two way radio typical consumers will usually come across, and you can purchase them at whatever department stores you normally shop at. The two channels it can work on are GMRS and FRS, hence the name. The first seven channels are shared between FRS and GMRS, while the former gets 8 through 14 and the latter gets 15 through 22. When you want to use these two way radios, you have to use the same channel in order to speak to each other. Every radio that is set to channel 7 can talk to each other, but not to someone whose radio is set to channel 6. As it is not an entirely private medium, you have to watch what you are talking about, as you might be eavesdropped on by someone else on the same channel you do not know is there. Make sure you get the right range for your channel, not to mention privacy. FRS only channels just broadcast at .5 watts, since there are government rules in place preventing it from going further. You can talk within a half mile to a mile of your partner with this particular type of channel, but you have far more space to work with if you use a GMRS channel, as it will work as hard as the radio can output power. However, you do need a license from the FCC in order to use GMRS frequencies to communicate. As stated earlier, privacy is virtually non-existent on a two way radio but if you want to avoid confusion and communication crowding you should move to a different channel if the one you choose is already being used by others. Since the 22 channel limit of choices there is a shortage of channels to make any channel low on traffic if you are at a crowded location. “Privacy Codes” are provided by most mid to upper range radios which allow a single channel to be broken up into 38-121 sub-channels. This translates into the availability of 1000 plus individual channels from which to choose with many radios.
