Do You Want To Work As An NLP Practitioner?

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) was founded in the 1970’s as an alternative to the established psychotherapies of the time. It still exists today as a method used to provide people with techniques leading to better self-awareness and communication. Professional NLP practitioners and coaches must become certified to practice the discipline and there are various, yet quite similar, ways to be one.

NLP does not have a governing body per se, but there are certain guidelines lain down that all of the different institutes tend to follow. As different as the classes or seminars might be, they will still attempt to convey the same ideals and practices involved with NLP. Part of the differentiation is due to the fact that NLP has had nearly 40 years to evolve, and several techniques and teaching methods have sprung up. The Society of NLP often helps regulate the methods, and those who complete the program are certified NLP practitioners.

Resume Cover Letters: Writing The Smoking Hot Snapshot

It’s pretty much common knowledge employers are clumsy and sometimes bungling when it comes to selecting the right employee. They go through a stack of resumes and they kid themselves into thinking this is the right way to go about getting at who to call in for the face-to-face first-time interview based upon a person’s job history, education, skills, interests, special awards, and other types of things that generally are included on a resume. Resume cover letters are your saving grace because you can be the attention-getter—you can point out all of your great virtues to the employer without feeling self-conscious. You can hook the employer like you never knew, and you are about to learn how.

It’s your turn to get in on a resume cover letter writing “secret”, a an effective route to get you in the door. This is the whole point of the resume cover letter—yes, you get the resume read, but more significantly to get your hiney in front of the person who does the hiring. So, first remember that you will be meeting a person. That person has feelings, likes, dislikes, and you guessed it—a personality like you do. Rewind. Understanding that the hiring manager has a much in common with you, you can capitalize on that by—here’s the first part of the “secret”—discovering these things in advance. Face it, by and large networking is what lands jobs. This is your chance to do some resume “under”cover letter research to find out some interesting facts about the hiring manager and/or the potential future boss. You will see a bit later how this all ties into resume cover letters.

Do you know an employee that works at the establishment you want to be a part of? Does he or she know the HR guy or enough about him or the boss to spill some beans? These beans aren’t confidential beans, just beans that give you a better idea of who you will be dealing with and work habits and things like hobbies, interests, traits, etc. If you don’t know someone who works there, that’s okay. You can meet one of the employees casually at the place you want to work at if you have to. It’s about doing what it takes to know more than the next guy. “Bump” into an unintimidating employee on their way out of work on a Friday, and after you chat with them a very short while, find out if the CEO is a good boss to work for and some other relevant details about him. What is the corporate culture? What else can you think of to find out comfortably by asking or just looking around at the setting? You’re not doing anything wrong here, you are just being practical. Alter the detail-gathering to your comfort level. What do you find that is rare in the environment that the personnel would probably pride themselves on?

After your little visit you are all set to jot down some awesome spotlights in your resume cover letter. How will you fit in at the place you want to work? Imagine that you already work there (you have some knowledge already from conversations and observation). Huh? That is, what can you articulate in your cover letter that makes it sound like you will be the right choice for the job. What is it about you that particularly demonstrates that you are the perfect one for the job?

You have an advantage at this point. Now at the very beginning of the resume cover letter, and right before the final period of the cover letter, you can note something that will make the hiring manager all warm and fuzzy, and think, “This guy (or gal) will be great to meet. Cover Letters, Resumes And The Job Hunter…What’s It All About?

Any good job hunter needs a resume package. The cover letter and resume always go together and do the same basic thing in slightly different ways. A job hunter without both of them will probably not get very far in the search for a good career position.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what these crucial documents should do for you. The first part, the cover letter, is a short one page letter consisting of three or four paragraphs. It serves as an introduction to the resume. It is the part that will always be seen by the gatekeeper.

The second part is the resume itself. Many job hunters make the mistake of thinking they can just leave a resume without a cover letter. That is like putting on a suit and tie, but forgetting the shirt or the pants. They are a package and they go together.

The resume itself may be in either functional or chronological format. The functional format concentrates on skills. The chronological format concentrates on employment listings. The most effective resumes use elements of both formats to create a combination resume that gets results. It should be laid out in a graphically appealing style, with adequate use of white space, bullet points to draw attention to important parts, and conservative fonts used. While you will occasionally bold face or italicize a font to draw attention to a point or break up a large section of type, changing fonts often makes it hard to read, so stick with one basic font. Also never go smaller than ten point type, and if possible stick with twelve or eleven point. Those sizes are easier to read. If your cover letter and resume are in a small type and hard to read, they simply will not be read, and will not help you.

Many job seekers wonder how they should present the resume package to the decision maker. There are several acceptable methods. If mailing it, use a large nine by twelve white envelope to avoid folding your materials. The white envelopes look nicer than the tan manila commonly used in business. Also large envelopes are generally the first thing people open when they get their mail. If not the first then they may save the large envelope for last. Since people tend to remember the first and the last – the alpha and the omega – while forgetting much of what is in the middle, either first or last is a good thing.

If you are hand delivering your documents stop by an office supply shop and pick up a clear plastic folder with a pressure binder spine and place your cover letter and resume in it. It makes a great presentation and will complement it perfectly. Use these tools well and you are on your way.
